WHAT’S ON at Arnos Vale

Join us for our first season of talks running this October to December. We’ve an exciting programme lined up, featuring notable academics from the Universities of Bristol, Bath and the West of England, exploring the diverse and fascinating popular customs associated with remembrance.

Victorian Funerals                                                                             Dr. Helen Frisby                            Friday 22nd October, 19:00-20:30

We kick off our Autumn programme with an exploration of the beliefs and customs associated with the Victorian ‘Cult of Death’ – prevalent in the hey-day of Arnos Vale.

The talk will consider folk customs, beliefs and rituals surrounding death, dying and bereavement in England during the period c.1840 to 1914. Many of these customs date directly from the Middle Ages, and they can also tell historians a great deal about Victorian village society.

Seasonal Festivals of Britain                                       Prof. Ronald Hutton                Thursday 28th October, 19:00-20:30

In the week leading up to Hallowe'en, we consider the traditional cycle of festivals of the ancient British year, with Hallowe'en itself as the first or last of these.

Beginning and ending with a consideration of Hallowe’en, this talk considers the way in which the passing year was celebrated in pre-industrial Britain, what those celebrations meant, and how the nature of the ritual year has changed with the coming of modern times.

Loss, Memory and War: Remembering the Fallen at Arnos Vale             Charles Booth                       Tuesday 23rd November, 19:00-20:30

In Arnos Vale’s month of Remembrance, we consider the changing forms of memorialisation that the Great War initiated.                                                                                                                                                                                               The enormous scale of casualties in the Great War forced nations and communities in the Twentieth century to forge new ways of remembering the fallen. The talk will provide an overview of the development of war memorials and war graves organisation in the United Kingdom, focusing on specific examples of memorials and individuals in Arnos Vale cemetery.

Angels and Mourning Today                                             Prof. Tony Walter              Wednesday 15th December, 19:00-20:30

Our last talk this season considers how contemporary popular culture engages with death and remembrance using the familiar motif of the ‘angel’.

Angels abound in contemporary popular culture - appearing in books, magazine articles, movies, websites and television programs. But do angels make sense to mourners today? The talk looks at a perhaps surprising place – the Sun newspaper’s online tributes for Jade Goody – to show there is much more to contemporary angelology than self-help and positive living.
